GS1 Transport & Logistics Training Workshop
GS1 Singapore hosted a two day training workshop for the member organisations from the Asia Pacific region on 5-6 November 2013. More than 20 representatives from the Asia Pacific regions participated in the workshop.
GS1 Singapore is honoured to host the inaugural workshop conducted by trainers from GS1 global office. The main objectives of the workshop are to drive awareness and increase adoption of the GS1 System in the Transport & Logistics Industry, allow greater understanding about Real implementation which would be to useful in local engagement and enable member organisations to actively support global activities ensuring the needs of their local T&L industry to be well-represented.

Transport and Logistics plays a big part in our daily business processes. Representatives from the various member organisations were given the chance to share their local experiences and engagement during the workshop.

After the sharing session by the participants, Ms. Audrey Kremer and Mr. Coen Janssen gave in depth presentations of three main topics. The focus topics are achieving visibility in Transport & Logistics, efficient shipping and receiving, and transport management.

On the second day of the workshop, Ms. Audrey Kremer and Mr. Coen Janssen discussed on border procedure management, warehouse & asset management, steps to local Transport & Logistics engagement.

After a sumptuous lunch, participants split into two groups and proceeded to an industry visit at the Grocery Logistics of Singapore Pte Ltd (GLS) and OCWS Logistics respectively.
GLS is a wholly owned subsidiary of NTUC Fairprice. GLS operates two Distribution Centres, namely Joo Koon and Penjuru Distribution Centres. The total floor area managed by GLS is 500,000 sq. ft., made up by 300,000 sq. ft. in Joo Koon and 200,000 sq. ft. in Penjuru. The Distribution Centres servicing all FairPrice and Cheers stores are operational seven days a week. Handling non-perishable products, GLS delivers more than 21 million cartons per year to the stores. A key feature in the Joo Koon distribution centre is the Material Handling System.
“It is impossible for us to operate efficiently in the retail industry without the tools and implementation from GS1. We would be expecting an exciting journey ahead as we move forward with automation technology and RFID. There will also be close collaboration and discussion with GS1,” said Mr Dickson Yeo, CEO, GLS.

OCWS Logistics Pte Ltd has grown steadily to become one of Singapore's foremost integrated logistics solution providers since their incorporation in August 1977. Their three Depots, totalling over 119,000 square metres, are fully-paved and capable of storing more than 15,200 TEUs of containers in an eight-high configuration located at Pioneer Sector, Penjuru and Tuas.
Mr. Ricky Loo, Deputy General Manager and his team briefed the representatives on OCWS overall operation at the Tuas depot. Representatives were taken on a guided tour to have a better understanding in the depot operation, container maintenance & repair and tank repair & clearing facilities. Mr. Loo was very passionate about their operation especially the latest ISO container repair and cleaning facilities.
Designed in full cooperation with the United Kingdom's AEA Technology (AEAT), the tank cleanout station adopts the most environmentally-friendly technology, which engages Nano filtration and Reverse Osmosis as the filtration media. To complement their excellent service, OCWS also provides a full range of repairs and maintenance for tank containers which include statutory testing, shell repair, removal of pitting and discoloration, passivation, frame repair and other general maintenance.
The GS1 representatives shared great feedback on the two day workshop and would be looking forward to the upcoming events.

The industry visit aids in appreciating the information given by the global trainers. I have enjoyed the two-day workshop and hope to participate in more workshops in the near future. A workshop which gathers international partners is encouraging as it allows sharing of best practices whereby member organisations are able to learn from one another,” shared Ms. Isabel A.
